Eligibility

As the name suggests, you can get a 16-25 Railcard if you're aged between 16-25.  Mature students (over the age of 26 and in full-time education) can also apply.

If you're aged 16-25 and buying your Railcard online, you'll need a valid UK driving licence or passport number to prove you're eligible.  You'll also need to be able to upload a digital passport style photo.

If you're aged 26 or over and in full time education, you'll need to provide proof that you're a full-time student at a recognised school or college.  You have to attend for over 15 hours a week and for at least 20 weeks a year.  You can either show an ISIC card or have the 'Mature students only' section of the application form completed and certified.

NUS cards will not be accepted as proof of age/educational status (Open University, distance learning and part-time courses do not qualify).

Because we need to see this proof, mature students are currently unable to buy online.  You must apply at a staffed station ticket office or a National Rail licensed Travel Agent (and will need to take a passport style photo).  The application form is included in the 16-25 Railcard leaflet, available at staffed train stations, or you can download the form so you can complete it before you head off to the station.

Special note on new 3-year Railcards
You can purchase a 3-year Railcard up until the day before your 24th birthday. 3-year Railcards are only available to buy online and are therefore not available to mature students.
